Philanthropy and Community
In 2016, Sysco introduced a new community giving strategy focused on an area that’s a natural fit for us: food. As part of this new strategy, our goal is to direct 75 percent of our community donations and volunteerism toward hunger relief initiatives across North America.
Sysco has a long history of feeding children through our partnership with Share Our Strength. Now we’re excited to not only reach children, but to focus on families and seniors as well.
This approach has already been implemented at Sysco’s Houston Headquarters. As a result, Sysco’s Corporate office has made significant five-year commitments to Houston Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, which will provide the Houston community with the following benefits:
- Houston Food Bank – 2.25 million meals supplied to families in the Greater Houston area;
- Meals on Wheels – 1.8 million breakfast meals delivered to seniors in the Greater Houston area;
- Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston – More than 51,000 children served at eleven Sysco Kids Cafes.
Sysco also partners in the Houston area with Kids’ Meals, Target Hunger, Urban Harvest, Brighter Bites, American Red Cross and United Way. While getting food where it’s needed is our primary goal, our secondary focus areas include education programs that foster a skilled workforce, and providing support and job opportunities for veterans.
Sysco’s operating companies independently manage their community giving and volunteer programs within the areas they serve, and will be implementing a similar hunger relief strategy over the next few years. By working together to rally around a single cause – getting healthy and nutritious food where it’s needed – we can create truly worthwhile change in our communities.
