Supporting Servicemen and Servicewomen in the Community
Supporting our active duty military, veterans and their families is important to Sysco and many of our operating companies support various events throughout the year.
Sysco Columbia hosted Operation Palmetto Employment’s (OPE) 2016 Midlands Summit, an event that emphasized the value of military hires. The event was designed to help CEOs, business owners, recruiters and hiring managers learn how to implement a successful military hiring strategy, take advantage of military hiring incentives, connect with OPE representatives and to allow for military-friendly employers to share best practices. The event was followed by lunch provided by our Business Resource department and hand crafted by our Corporate Chefs.
Sysco Columbia has partnered with OPE since Governor Nikki Haley launched the initiative in 2014, when the OpCo hosted the inaugural Midlands Summit.
In addition, more than 100 Sysco Eastern Maryland volunteers recently supported the 10th Invincible Spirit Festival at Fort Belvoir Military Hospital in Virginia and Sysco Baltimore volunteers supported a similar event at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md for the third consecutive year.
The daylong festival, hosted by the Gary Sinise Foundation, aims to offer injured soldiers a bright reminder of hope and positivity along their road to recovery. Our volunteers and celebrity chef Robert Irvine prepared thousands of hamburgers and hot dogs to feed soldiers and their families attending the event while Gary Sinise & the Lt. Dan Band concert provided live music.
